Two incredible stories, two very different routes. Hayley Barna, a college success story who built Birchbox from the ground up, and Darren Huston a CEO and co-founder of Priceline, who continue to dominate in their sector. One is fresh from acquiring another company, the other announced one of the rounds of the year only a few months ago. These are two very different stories, but both have similar beginnings.
In April of this year Birchbox announced a $60m round to make beauty products go viral. This was the next step on an incredible journey for CEO and co-founder Hayley Barna. 29 year-old Hayley’s entrepreneurial story began, as all good stories do, with a chance meeting of her co-founder Katia Beauchamp. They met at Harvard Business School and started Birchbox from their campus apartment.
Their company sends out a box of top products and educational content each month to their 800,000+ subscribers worldwide to help consumers cut through the clutter of the retail world. The products in the box are personalized to the recipient based on their beauty profile (women’s) or grooming profile (men’s). Subscribers receive different products each month based on what they are most likely to like.
At The Summit you can hear how Hayley’s dream of creating “a best friend beauty editor” was realized and how they raised that $60million in April. In the meantime you can read more about Hayley’s story here.
June has been a busy month for Darren Huston, President and CEO of one of the world’s leading group of online travel brands, The Priceline Group. The Group includes the big payers in the travel industry: Priceline.com, Booking.com, rentalcars.com, Agoda and KAYAK. After making ripples in the travel services sector with the acquisition of Buuteeq, a digital marketing platform for hotels worldwide, Huston went a step further sealing the deal to also add OpenTable to the group’s list of subsidiaries in a deal worth $2.6 billion last month.
Huston has been a leader in the travel services market since joining The Priceline Group in 2011. Previously he spent 7+ years at Microsoft in various positions, namely President and CEO of the companies operations in Japan. He has also been Senior Vice President at Starbucks where he headed up their product development in the late 1990s. A lot of experience to share when he comes to Dublin in November.
These two wonderful speakers are just a small sample of the people who will be coming to tell their story and giving their insights into how tech is changing every facet of peoples’ lifestyles – whether that’s booking a restaurant table or trialing new beauty products!
Hayley and Darren are the latest speakers to be confirmed for The Summit Dublin – others that will be speaking include Peter Thiel, Phil Libin and Padmasree Warrior. You can see all our speakers here.
