“It by far exceeded our expectations”: uKonect’s guide to Web Summit 2015

Jordan Mathias is a Founding Partner at professional networking site uKonect. In this guest post he talks us through his team’s experience at Web Summit 2015. 

The three of us landed in Dublin on the November 2. We wanted to get there a day early because we had an appointment with one of Arnaud‘s contacts  who works within LinkedIn.

It was an awesome experience as he spent over two hours with us, touring the building and sharing advice.

Day One

Where to start… An event with more than 40,000 attendees over a three-day span! Basically there a lot of people.

We mainly spent the first day at Centre Stage, there were some amazing speakers from top-notch companies. To name just a few:

Slack Co-Founder Stewart Butterfield; Dell Founder and CEO, Michael Dell, Michael Dell; Facebook CTO, Mike Schroepfer, and the list goes on.

Day Two

The day started out with an excellent conference with Nicolas Brusson, Co-Founder and COO of BlablaCar (the world’s leading ridesharing community). He shared his unique experience on how it all started and how they eventually became the first French startup to be valued at over $1 billion.

One of the many great perks when you attend the Web Summit, is that you can meet a lot of VCs and investors. We were able to set up appointments with some of them and get feedback on our product, business model etc.

Wednesday evening we were invited to attend an event organised by the French Tech in downtown Dublin. There was a great atmosphere with so many young entrepreneurs gathered together in the same place.

Day 3

Finally the most important day for us – the day we exhibited at Web Summit. After two days of intense networking and little sleep — to say that we were tired would be an understatement — we knew this last day was going to be a marathon.

From 9am to 5pm there was a constant flow people, ranging from simple Web Summit attendees to investors and potential clients.

We were told by other startups that our ability to approach people ourselves would be the key to having a successful experience.

Sure enough we quickly realised that advice to be true: 99 percent of the time if we didn’t approach people you could be sure they wouldn’t stop by our stand.

Usually making eye contact and saying ‘hi’ was enough to get their attention.

It was an eventful packed day with so many incredible and positive encounters.

Initially we didn’t know what to expect from the Web Summit, especially after changing our strategy only a few weeks earlier.

In the end it by far exceeded our expectations and we would highly recommend any startup to participate at this or any similar event.
